Our veteran team* of investment and operational personnel has deep telecommunications sector investment expertise. As a result, Melody believes it is well-positioned to source, underwrite and manage investments in communications infrastructure for strong risk-adjusted returns.
Additionally, a Senior Advisory Board of leading executives in the space has been assembled to assist in deal sourcing through its senior networks and to provide advisory support in underwriting, operating and monetizing investments as well as in other areas requested by Melody from time to time.
Omar Jaffrey is a Managing Partner and Founder of Melody Investment Advisors. Mr. Jaffrey is also Co-Founder of Melody Capital Management where he is a member of Melody’s Investment Committee, leads all Melody TMT related investments and was the architect of Melody’s communications infrastructure strategy.
Over his 30 year career, Mr. Jaffrey has been involved in M&A, strategic partnerships, public and private debt and equity, and restructuring and bankruptcies, principally in TMT. Over the course of his career, Mr. Jaffrey held the titles of Vice Chairman and Senior Advisor for TAP Advisors. Prior to joining TAP, Mr. Jaffrey was a Managing Director of UBS Investment Bank, most recently serving as Americas Co-head of the Special Situations Group. Mr. Jaffrey also helped build UBS’s Telecom Media and Technology Investment Banking and was Global Head of Satellite Investment Banking and specialized in convergence of TMT between 2003 and 2009 Prior to joining UBS, Mr. Jaffrey was a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch where he built the Global Satellite Investment Banking practice. In the early 90s, Mr. Jaffrey helped build Bear Stearns’ Investment Bank in Asia, and was a founding member of Bear Stearns’ Telecommunications sector Investment Banking practice.
Mr. Jaffrey was an advisor to ATT, Verizon, Sprint, Direct TV, and XMS Satellite Radio, covering over 50 global clients in the TMT space for their strategic and financing needs.
Mr. Jaffrey holds a BS magna cum laude in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University and an MBA from Stanford University, and is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies.
John Apostolides is an Investment Partner at Melody Investment Advisors (“Melody”), an alternative asset manager focused on private equity and structured investments in mission-critical communications infrastructure assets. Mr. Apostolides has 18 years of experience as an investor and investment / merchant banker in the TMT sector.
Mr. Apostolides was previously a Managing Director at Macquarie Capital where he led many of the team’s advisory, investing and capital-raising efforts in the communications infrastructure, satellite, cable, wireless, enterprise communications and Internet of Things sectors. Before joining Macquarie, Mr. Apostolides was a Vice President within Evercore's Corporate Advisory business advising companies in the Communications sector. Mr. Apostolides started his career at Citigroup where he spent nearly seven years as a member of the Communications and Technology Investment Banking teams in New York and London.
He has been a panelist and speaker at key industry events including the Wireless Infrastructure Association’s Connect (X), SuperReturn Global Infrastructure (London), World Satellite Business Week (Paris), Satellite Innovation (Silicon Valley) and the annual Washington D.C. satellite conferences.
Mr. Apostolides holds a BA cum laude in Economics and minor in Music from Dartmouth College.
Joshua Oboler, CFA
Joshua Oboler is an Investment Partner for Melody Investment Advisors. Mr. Oboler has over 14 years of experience in private credit investing and investment banking.
Mr. Oboler’s previous roles include advisor at UBS Investment Bank’s TMT group where he focused on M&A advisory, debt capital markets, and equity capital markets transactions with both U.S. and international clients. Mr. Oboler worked on a range of transactions including spectrum financing, wireless, wireline, cable, traditional and new media, film financing, music, and internet companies.
Mr. Oboler began his career working for Rabobank International in New York and Amsterdam, focusing on credit risk management, structured finance, leveraged finance, and M&A advisory.
Mr. Oboler is a director of Zubie, a Melody credit fund portfolio company. Mr. Oboler also serves on the Board of Directors of UJA-Federation of New York.
Mr. Oboler holds a BA in Economics with a minor in Business from Brandeis University.
Mr. Zakarin is Vice President at Melody Investment Advisors. Mr. Zakarin has over 10 years of experience in private credit, private equity and investment banking.
Previously, Mr. Zakarin was at Blue Road Capital, a middle-market private equity fund focused on food and agriculture-related businesses. While at Blue Road, Mr. Zakarin worked on over 10 acquisitions representing hundreds of millions of dollars of enterprise value, including the acquisition of Diamond Foods from Snyder’s-Lance. Additionally, Mr. Zakarin was deeply involved in the ongoing operations and management of Diamond and helped craft Blue Road’s turnaround strategy in partnership with the CEO.
Mr. Zakarin began his career working in M&A advisory for Centerview Partners, where he focused mainly on the Consumer and Industrial sectors. While at Centerview, Mr. Zakarin advised on approximately $30 billion of transactions, including advising Heinz on its go-private takeover by 3G Capital and Berkshire Hathaway.
Mr. Zakarin graduated with honors from Princeton University with a BA in History and minors in Near Eastern Studies and Environmental Studies.
Zach Fredman is an Associate at Melody Investment Advisors. Mr. Fredman has over 4 years of experience in strategy consulting, due diligence and private equity.
Prior to joining Melody, Mr. Fredman was a Senior Analyst at Altman Vilandrie & Company, a boutique consulting firm focused on the TMT industries. At Altman Vilandrie, Mr. Fredman advised financial sponsors and operating companies on M&A transactions and strategy development in the fiber, data center, wireless, subsea cable and broadcast sectors across the US, Latin America and Europe.
Mr. Fredman graduated with a BA in Economics from Brown University.
Ben Lei is an Associate at Melody Investment Advisors. Mr. Lei has over 3 years of experience in investment banking.
Previously, Mr. Lei was an Analyst at TAP Advisors, where he focused on M&A advisory in the communications infrastructure sector. Mr. Lei advised operating companies and financial sponsors on a variety of transactions, including the recapitalization of Tarpon Towers, John Hancock’s investment in Diamond Communications and AT&T’s issuance of tower preferred interests.
Mr. Lei graduated with an AB in Economics from Princeton University.
Mr. Bacino is Operating Partner and President of Melody Wireless Infrastructure’s
easements REIT. Prior, Mr. Bacino was the leader of the West Region of American Tower, overseeing all activity for the Western United States including management of 10,000 towers.
Mr. Bacino has also served as the Global Vice President/General Manager of Wireless Solutions at Powerwave Technologies, leading the international teams in the deployment of end to end wireless solutions. Before this role, he held the VP of Marketing Operations at Terrestar Networks overseeing the execution of marketing efforts in the Americas.
Prior to these roles, he held the Vice President of Global business development and Vice President of Enterprise sales at Nextel Communications roles overseeing both domestic and international teams.
David Bacino attended the University of Tulsa and University of Kansas and in 1983 received his Bachelor of Science degree.
Mr. Pedraza is an Operating Partner. Before joining Melody he was the Managing Partner at JP Partners providing strategic advisory services for wireless infrastructure companies. Previously Mr. Pedraza co-founded Unison Site Management, a dominant cell site lease acquisition company in the U.S. At Unison Site Management he helped lead the aggregation of over 6,000 individual assets with a total value of $1.4 billion. He was also co-head of Origination and built and managed a 75-person nationwide origination team. Prior to joining Unison, he held senior positions at new media firms Le Monde Interactif and Concrete Inc. From 1989 to 1998, Mr. Pedraza was a professor at Williams College.
Mr. Pedraza holds a BA in History from Cornell University and a PhD in Comparative Literature from Yale University.
Chester R. Dawes
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Dawes is Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. He has over 25 years of experience in financial services and industrial companies focused on operational finance, process improvement and complex transactions.
Previously, Mr. Dawes was the Head of Finance Transformation, Global Wealth and Asset Management for Manulife/John Hancock, an organization that manages over $800 billion in assets. Before joining Manulife/John Hancock, he was the Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer for one of the largest private equity firms in Canada, specializing in distressed and undervalued investing, where he helped raise over $6 billion in capital and played a pivotal role in growing the firm.
Mr. Dawes has also served as CFO (Specialty Funds) and Director, Finance at Brookfield Asset Management, Inc. In addition, he has held progressively senior positions in Canada, Europe and Asia for Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. (“Husky”). Prior to joining Husky, Mr. Dawes was an auditor with Deloitte in Toronto, Canada.
Mr. Dawes is a Chartered Professional Accountant (Ontario), Chartered Accountant (Ontario), Certified Public Accountant (U.S.), Certified Global Management Accountant, and a CFA charterholder. He holds a Bachelor of Mathematics, Honors Mathematics-Chartered Professional Accountancy degree, and a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Waterloo.
Chief Compliance Officer
Mr. Cole is Chief Compliance Officer. Mr. Cole has over 25 years of experience representing clients in complex transactions.
Previously Mr. Cole served as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Merisant Company. As part of a small senior executive team, Mr. Cole helped guide the business and financial restructuring and sale of this global consumer products company. Prior to joining Merisant, Mr. Cole worked in private practice at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, representing clients in debt and equity financings, M&A transactions and reorganizations.
Mr. Cole holds a BA in History with honors (Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Chicago and a JD and MA from New York University.
Robert Bueti, CPA
Robert Bueti is the Controller at Melody Investment Advisors. Mr. Bueti has over 10 years of experience in the alternative investment industry working with hedge funds, private equity, and credit funds.
Prior to joining Melody, Robert was the Controller at Amber Capital, where he was responsible for the financial reporting and middle office operations of multiple hedge funds.
Before joining Amber Capital, Mr. Bueti was a Senior Fund Accountant at American Securities, where he was responsible for the accounting and reporting of private equity and credit funds and their respective advisors. Mr. Bueti began his career as an auditor at Marcum, LLP, where he performed audits of commercial and residential real estate properties.
Mr. Bueti holds a Bachelor of Science cum laude in Accounting and a Master's of Science in Taxation from the University at Albany. He is a Certified Public Accountant.
Director of HR & ESG
Anna Tovbin is the Director of HR & ESG for Melody Investment Advisors. Ms. Tovbin has over 10 years of experience in human capital within global financial institutions.
Prior to joining Melody, Ms. Tovbin was a HR Business Partner at Arcesium (The D.E. Shaw Group), where she was responsible for setting and delivering strategic people and culture initiatives in line with business strategy and priorities of the group. Ms. Tovbin drove the human capital management strategy, including talent acquisition and development, compensation and benefits, as well as, employee engagement programs.
Prior to Arcesium, Ms. Tovbin held global human capital positions at Goldman Sachs, Neuberger Berman, Morgan Stanley, and Jennison Associates where she managed all aspects of human capital including execution of strategy, policies, and programs.
Ms. Tovbin holds a BA summa cum laude in Applied Psychology and Human Relations with a minor in Pre-Law from Pace University.
